Our Environmental Commitment

Welcome to Charlie B's Backpackers

We are pleased that you have decided to spend time in our garden city. We believe in protecting this beautiful region and country we live in.

The team at Charlie B's understands that all businesses create an environmental and social impact through their activities. Our sustainability will be an ongoing journey which will improve with time and experience. Therefore we have developed the following policies which are based on  our commitment to improve our environmental performance across all areas of our business practice.

Energy

-   We are reducing our demand on energy by purchasing local produce where possible, to reduce transport emissions.

-   Low-energy light bulbs are installed in at least 80% of our premises.

-   Our energy supplier buys from renewable generation resources.

-   Our staff alway endeavour to turn off lights, heating or equipment when not needed. We hope you will help us by doing the same.

Waste

-    We give you the opportunity to recycle your waste. There are recycling stations in our kitchen and also in the corridors on each level of the building. By separating the recycling we reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.

-   We try to reduce waste by not purchasing products with excessive packaging and through wise purchasing.

Water

-         Our staff turn off taps when we are not directly using water. We hope you will do the same. Please help us by reporting any taps or showers that have water dripping or leaking.

-         We regulate garden watering by use of our irrigation system.

Community

-     Donation of supplementary products to local charities.

-     Support of the Christchurch RSA's Poppy Day Appeal.

-     Support of the Cancer Society Daffodil Day.

-     Sponsor of a guide dog puppy for the blind (her name is Gretel)

Conservation

-     Charlie B's Backpackers is a member of Keep New Zealand Beautiful. A non-profit organisation operating as a charitable trust to promote litter batement, waste reduction and town and city beautification. Visit www.knzb.org.nz which provides more information.
